Frankfurt airport flooded after storm, air traffic suspended

Heavy rain and thunderstorms hit the German city of Frankfurt, inundating roads and bringing traffic to a standstill. Videos shared on social media showed waterlogged streets and the Frankfurt airport completely flooded.

Several flights in and out of Frankfurt airport, Germany's main international airport, were diverted or canceled as the heavy downpour continued and runways turned into swimming pools.

Last week, as heavy showers lashed southern Germany, one storm brought a freak hail event to the city of Reutlingen. Though the hailstones were average in size, the amount that fell was remarkable, with up to a foot accumulating in less than an hour.

This led to the bizarre sight of snowploughs in August, and more than 250 firefighters and city workers helping to clear the roads, reported The Guardian.

Afterwards some localised flooding occurred as meltwater flowed into basements and underground car parks.
