Nearly Half of Arbaeen Pilgrims Expected to Travel via Mehran Border
The Deputy Chairman for Technology Development and Smartization of the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization has announced that approximately 49% of Arbaeen pilgrims are expected to pass through the Mehran BCP this year. Additional projections indicate that over 26% will use the Shalamcheh border, 13% the Khosravi border, 9.5% the Chazabeh border, 1.4% the Tamerchin border and 1% the Bashmaq border.

According to Mansour Fakhran, the peak period for the outgoing trips is anticipated between August 14 and 17, while the peak return period for the Arbaeen pilgrims will occur from August 22 to 25. Mr. Fakhran also reiterated that of the estimated 2,700 buses required for transport on the peak return day, approximately 70% will be allocated to the Mehran and Khosravi borders. Furthermore, parking facilities with a capacity of 147,000 vehicles will be required at the same border, 97,000 vehicles at the Shalamcheh border and 21,000 vehicles at the Chazabeh border.
Projections for the Arbaeen pilgrimage indicate a need for 6,000 active buses to handle return traffic from the six designated borders, with over 69% assigned to the Mehran and Khosravi borders and 25% to the Shalamcheh border. Fakhran also noted that of the total demand for bus travel during the pilgrimage, 30% will be specific to pilgrims from Tehran and Isfahan provinces.
Analyzing traffic patterns from previous years, Mr. Fakhran predicted that 1.8 million pilgrims will cross the Mehran border, resulting in significant traffic congestion on roads leading to the border crossing. To address this, special traffic measures will be implemented on the key routes, including the Golan-Rezaabad section of the Salehabad-Mehran route and the Shabab-Hamil return routes.
IRAN Roads Management Center is preparing to provide comprehensive support for the Arbaeen pilgrims. Initiatives include:
• Daily traffic monitoring reports.
• A dedicated version of the 141 application.
• A comprehensive Arbaeen module within the license plate reader data mining system (DAP).
• Real-time monitoring of the access roads and routes using in-vehicle cameras.
• Activation of the Arbaeen exclusive page in the fleet tracker management system.
These measures aim to enhance route management, improve fleet dispatch efficiency and ensure high-quality services for pilgrims traveling to and from the Arbaeen borders.
