Porterbrook Showcases HydroFLEX at Greatest Gathering
Attendees at Alstom’s Greatest Gathering this past weekend were treated to a tour of HydroFLEX, the UK’s first and only hydrogen-ready heavy rail passenger train from Porterbrook.

Attendees at Alstom’s Greatest Gathering this past weekend were treated to a tour of HydroFLEX, the UK’s first and only hydrogen-ready heavy rail passenger train from Porterbrook.
The event allowed visitors to take a full tour of the train’s hydrochamber, as well as take part in a number of interactive activities with the Porterbrook team.
The train, which has been developed and tested at the Long Marston Rail Innovation Centre, HydroFLEX utilises the body of a Class 319 electric multiple unit, which has been fitted with with hydrogen fuel tanks, a fuel cell and a battery pack to enable cleaner passenger train travel.
Porterbrook also showcased a demonstration on remote condition monitoring, which looked to illustrate how real-time data can be used to enhance fleet performance, safety and reliability.
