Cargo ships begin to sink en - route from Oman to Alang

|
TIN news:        A Yemeni-flagged cargo ship on its way from Oman to Alang for scrapping sank Saturday off the coast of Amreli district in India, near Pipava, according to local media reports.

MV Abdullah, with a crew of eight on board, dragged her anchor in rough seas and began to capsize after running aground, according to the Indian Coast Guard, which rescued all crew onboard, most of them from Pakistan.

The vessel’s sister ship MV Ayman, also anchored in the area, sent out a distress call around the same time after the rough conditions caused the ship to develop a severe list due to flooding, Pipavav port officials have confirmed.

Pipavav Marine Police launched two patrol boats and rescued three crew members aboard the sinking MV Ayman and eight others aboard the striken MV Abdullah.

“We have rescued all the 17 crew members of the twin vessels,” superintendent of police of Amreli district, Antrip Sood, told The Indian Express. “The vessels were going towards Alang for dismantling. We are waiting for further details.”

Sood did not clarify the reason for the discrepancy in reported numbers of crewmembers on board the two ships, but it is believed all were rescued without injury.

The vessels “had lowered their anchors away from the coast for the last two days as formalities of allowing them entry to Alang yard were being performed” said Mahipat Zala, police sub-inspector (PSI) of Pipava Marine Police.

Coast Guard officials in Pipava said 10 of the crew members were Pakistani nationals, five Yemenii and one each from India and Iraq.
