TIN news:  The New Orleans Aviation Board (NOAB) and New Orleans Mayor have announced a five-gate expansion of the North Terminal Project at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in Louisiana, the US.
With the construction of five new gates, the total number of gates at the airport’s North Terminal complex will increase from 30 to 35.
NOAB chair Cheryl Teamer said: “The North Terminal Project always included the option to expand to as high as 42 gates.
“Due to our current passenger traffic and anticipated future growth, a five gate expansion is necessary to handle continued growth in the facility.”
The 820,000ft² North Terminal complex, the construction of which commenced last year, will help offer a major economic boost to the New Orleans metropolitan region.
Announced in April 2013, the new facility will be built on the north side of the existing Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport property.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said: “This gate expansion is great news for our city and state. We are growing at a record pace.
"This gate expansion is great news for our city and state."
“In 2016, the growth of the Louis Armstrong International Airport exceeded our expectations yet again. With increased service via 17 airlines and 59 non-stop destinations, including seven international destinations, we have hit the triggers for additional expansion.”
The new terminal development will generate more than 13,000 new construction job opportunities, as well as other opportunities for local businesses and disadvantaged business enterprises (DBEs) in the region.
The North Terminal complex will have a car park accommodating 2,200 vehicles, a central utility plant and a ground transportation staging area.
Expected to complete in October 2018, the $110m expansion project will be funded through airport bonds.
