AECOM and WSP have been appointed to deliver detailed design services for the Sydney Metro West Linewide Systems package, working with project lead and contractor John Holland.

Sydney Metro West is a major rail infrastructure project linking Parramatta and the Sydney central business district. The line is intended to increase rail capacity between the two centres and support future passenger demand.

Under the Linewide Systems package, the AECOM–WSP joint venture will design the twin-bore tunnel fit-out across 24 kilometres, along with a new metro train depot and service facility. The scope also includes traction power systems, tunnel ventilation, and core rail systems covering operations and maintenance.

Mark McManamny, AECOM’s chief executive for Australia and New Zealand, said:

Sydney Metro West will play a vital role in shaping a more connected, livable Sydney, delivering faster, more reliable journeys for communities now and into the future. AECOM is globally recognized for our ability to deliver rail systems at this scale, and we’ll apply AECOM’s depth of expertise from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Europe and Hong Kong to deliver a safe, reliable and sustainable metro for Sydney.

The joint venture will use a digital delivery approach for design and coordination. According to AECOM, this will include automated modelling of tunnel fit-out systems and a shared digital design environment linking project teams across several regions. The system is intended to support design integration, stakeholder review and change management across the corridor’s two tunnels.

Mark Southwell, chief executive of AECOM’s global Transportation business said:

We are proud to support the delivery of one of Sydney’s most complex and impactful transportation projects. Our unmatched technical excellence, approach to innovation, and deep history of delivering transformative infrastructure in Sydney make us ideally positioned to deliver on this project, and these advantages are part of why AECOM remains Engineering News-Record’s number one transportation firm in the world.
