CSX has announced the signing of a 670 million USD deal with the Wabtec Corporation to upgrade its fleet with 100 new Evolution Series locomotives, 50 modernised locomotives and a suite of digital solutions and services.

All new Evolution Series locomotives will support the CSX fleet by working to improve fuel efficiency, tractive effort and overall reliability, with each locomotive designed to reduce fuel consumption whilst maintaining performance for both long-haul and heavy-duty operations.

CSX will also modernise a number of older, aging D9 locomotives by converting their power systems from DC to AC traction – extending their current service lives, improve fleet standardisation and enable the use of advanced control and diagnostic technologies.

Mike Cory, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at CSX, said:

Our locomotive fleet is a fundamental element of our safe and reliable railroad.

Modernising these critical assets strengthens network performance and supports the level of service our customers depend on.

Finally, the order also includes the installation of digital technologies designed to support more efficient locomotive operations. All new and modernised locomotives will be equipped with Trip Optimizer with Smart Horsepower per Ton, an EPA-certified system intended to support fuel efficiency.

Delivery of the Evolution Series locomotives is expected this year, with the modernised locomotives set to begin arriving in 2027.
