New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has published details of public transport services for the 2025 Christmas and New Year period.

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has published details of public transport services for the 2025 Christmas and New Year period.

Most agencies will operate on weekend or holiday timetables, with additional subway and commuter rail services scheduled for New Year’s Eve.

New York City Subway

Christmas Eve (Wednesday 24 December) : Regular weekday service

Christmas Day (Thursday 25 December) : Sunday service

New Year’s Eve (Wednesday 31 December) : Regular weekday service, with additional evening and post-midnight trains on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, C, D, G, N, Q, R lines and the 42 Street Shuttle. A trains will run express until 2:30 am.

New Year’s Day (Thursday 1 January) : Sunday service

New York City Buses

Christmas Eve : Reduced weekday service on routes in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and some parts of Queens; other Queens routes will operate a regular weekday schedule. Staten Island buses will run on a weekday schedule.

Christmas Day : Sunday service in all five boroughs.

New Year’s Eve : Reduced weekday service on most routes in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan, and selected routes in Queens; other Queens routes will operate a regular weekday schedule. Staten Island buses will run on a weekday, school-closed schedule. Some routes around Midtown may be diverted due to road closures.

New Year’s Day : Sunday service in all boroughs.

Certain express and limited routes, including B100, B103, BM1–BM5 and all BXM routes, will continue to operate on regular weekday schedules on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Access-A-Ride

Paratransit services will operate 24 hours a day throughout the holiday period, including Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Customers are advised to allow extra time due to holiday traffic and possible changes to pick-up or drop-off locations, particularly around Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

Long Island Rail Road

Christmas Eve : Regular weekday service

Christmas Day : Sunday service

New Year’s Eve : Eleven additional trains will operate from early evening on the Babylon, Montauk, Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson and Port Washington branches to Penn Station and Grand Central Madison.

New Year’s Day : Twelve additional overnight trains will run for passengers returning to Long Island. Sunday service will operate throughout the day.

Metro-North Railroad

During Christmas and New Year weeks, Metro-North will adjust timetables across its network. On several weekdays around the holidays, East of Hudson lines will operate on Friday schedules with additional mid-day and mid-afternoon services. Christmas Day and New Year’s Day will generally follow hourly or weekend patterns, with extra late-evening and post-midnight trains provided on New Year’s Eve. West of Hudson lines will largely follow regular weekday schedules, with weekend service on the public holidays.

Passengers planning travel over the holiday period are encouraged to review schedules in advance and allow additional time, particularly on New Year’s Eve.
