Hitachi Rail has published its 2025 Sustainability Statement, which comes following the company’s launch of its new sustainability report and strategy, PLEDGES, in April.

The statement looks to underscore its role in the transition to low-emission mobility, as well as report its overall progress across all ESG pillars.

PLEDGES, a group-wide strategy consisting of seven strategic pillars, aims to underpin Hitachi’s sustainability efforts alongside targets it hopes to achieve in the next three years – including a 75% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2027 within its operational sites (Scope 1 and 2).

The statement also sees Hitachi reaffirm its commitments to ‘leading the sustainable development of the mobility sector’ by introducing new solutions, reducing its environmental impact and promoting responsible practices.

Efforts detailed include Hitachi’s efforts to reduce landfill waste to zero at its Hagerstown (USA), Naples, and Reggio Calabria (Italy) sites; the opening of a carbon-neutral digital factory in Hagerstown (powered entirely by renewable electricity and photovoltaics); progress on its tri-mode trains (including a UK contract for intercity battery trains); the application of Eco-Design principles to all newly developed vehicles and more.

The 2025 report aligns with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and unveils a renewed Double Materiality Assessment (DMA) approach under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which is being actively supported by stakeholder engagement.

Methodology used integrates financial performance, risk management and operational activities in order to ensure both compliance and best practice through comprehensive evaluation of material ESG topics.

Giuseppe Marino, Group CEO, Hitachi Rail said:

Hitachi Rail is a business with a clear social purpose and our 2025 Statement underlines that sustainability is as the core of our growth.

By embedding the PLEDGES strategy at the core of our operations and decision-making, we are positioning our business to meet global challenges and deliver on our mission: the sustainable mobility transition.
