As part of the upcoming Budget statement, the UK Government is expected to give its formal backing to the extension of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) into Thamesmead in south-east London.

The plan aims to create a new branch line off the existing Beckton line, starting at Gallions Reach and running eastward to a new station at Beckton Riverside. It will then tunnel beneath the River Thames to reach a new terminus in Thamesmead.

The project is designed to unlock major development sites on both sides of the river by providing fast, frequent rail access to an area currently underserved by public transport. It is expected to support 25,000–30,000 new homes and thousands of jobs, with journey times to Canary Wharf and central London significantly reduced.

Darren Caplan, Chief Executive of the Railway Industry Association said:

The Railway Industry Association (RIA) welcomes reports that the Chancellor Rachel Reeves will extend the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Thamesmead and her recognition that rail investment can drive connectivity and growth for the UK. RIA has long called for the Government to use private investment to support publicly funded rail projects. The plan is also an important reminder of how new rail schemes can be a catalyst for the creation of new housing and jobs.

If approved in the Budget, the scheme will move into detailed design and procurement, with construction expected to start around 2028 and services planned to open in the early 2030s

For the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and TfL, this extension has been a key infrastructure ask. Securing the go-ahead is therefore a political as well as practical milestone.

If things proceed on schedule:

  • Formal tendering could begin around mid-2026
  • Construction is forecast to start around 2028
  • Opening is currently targeted for the early 2030s

The Budget announcement expected to approve the DLR extension to Thamesmead will take place on Wednesday, 26 November.
