Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has invited young engineers to apply for its 2026 intake of apprentices.

Vacancies for the positions are now live as the operator has begun its latest recruitment drive.

The operator is looking to offer aspiring engineers the opportunity to learn how to maintain GRT’s fleet of trains for Southern, Great Northern and Gatwick Express and progressively take on more responsibilities as the four-year apprenticeship progresses.

Made up of a balance of both practical and theory learning, the apprenticeship is open to young people aged 16 and above, with all candidates required to possess a Level 4 qualification in GCSE English, Maths, and Science to apply.

Cameron Wytiahlowsky, Engineering Apprentice Trainer Assessor at GTR, said:

Engineering is at the heart of everything we do at GTR because our colleagues keep our trains moving for the thousands of customers who rely on our services. As we continue to upgrade our fleet and infrastructure, we’re always looking for the next generation of engineers who are eager to start a career in the railway. This is a brilliant opportunity to learn the trade, where apprentices will gain a wealth of knowledge on different types of trains, faults and GTR depots, while earning a salary.

Those who train with us will receive free travel across the network, making it easier for apprentices of all backgrounds to get to college and other locations, so they can unlock their full potential. GTR offers extensive development opportunities and many of our apprentices gain permanent employment at GTR after finishing their apprenticeship. Several of our managers also started their careers with us through an apprenticeship.

GTR has stated that the salary for the position starts at 17,245 GBP,  which will increase during the course, with fourth year apprentices expected to earn 24,090 GBP.
