Irish Rail Awards Contract for Major Rail Infrastructure Programme

Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) has appointed Jacobs to support a major rail infrastructure programme in Ireland. The project focuses on modernising and expanding a key regional and intercity corridor from Galway to Portarlington, spanning approximately 140 kilometres (87 miles) with connections to Dublin.

The programme aims to improve capacity, journey times, and service frequency, while also addressing the need for decarbonisation and enhanced accessibility in the Western region.

In the initial stages, Jacobs will deliver consultancy services covering the pre-feasibility, feasibility, and preferred option selection phases. These assessments will examine the potential for additional track infrastructure, electrification, and service enhancements.

We believe strongly that providing frequent and reliable rail services to more and more communities will greatly assist in reducing reliance on private cars and will go a long way to meeting Ireland’s climate action targets.

The framework agreement covers a four-year period, with an option to extend for a further four years. The project is being supported by the National Transport Authority and is funded under Project Ireland 2040, which forms part of the National Development Plan 2018–2027. The broader aim of the plan is to promote compact urban growth, low-emission transport modes, and greater resilience to climate change.
