Finferries has ordered a new hybrid electric ferry, which will operate on the Föglö route, and operated by Ansgar AB. Traffic on the Åland Föglö route is expected to start on April 1, 2022.

The new ferry will be powered mainly by shore-based battery packs and backed up by diesel generators. It will be 100.5 meters long, and 17.4 meters wide, with traffic on the Åland Föglö route expected to begin on April 1 2022.

Finland's first hybrid ferry Elektra will serve as a reference for the design of the new ferry. Commenting on the new ferry, Mats Rosin, Managing Director of Suomen Lauttaliikenne Oy, said that:

"Environmentally friendly Elektra has been a success. Its innovative hybrid system has won numerous international awards. Larger than previous road ferries, Elektra has completely changed the flow of traffic on Finland's busiest ferry route from Parainen to Nauvo
"

The Managing Director also added that the new ferry could be described as Elektra 2.0, as technology in this field has developed tremendously in recent years.

The contract for the ferry also includes an option for another similar hybrid board.
