Indian Government plans $۱۴.۲bn underground ring road between Mumbai and Surat

TIN news:      The Indian Government proposes to build an underground ring road between Mumbai and Surat, with an estimated investment of approximately INR900bn ($14.2bn).
 
Union Road and transport minister Nitin Gadkari told PTI that the new project can be linked to the proposed Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway.
 
Gadkari said: "To improve connectivity and at the same time ensure that the scenic beauty of the city is not disturbed while creating bridges and roads, we are considering building a tunnel road that would go up to the proposed Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway."

Set to start from the Mahim Creek in the city's central part, one section of the proposed tunnel road would connect the Bandra-Worli Sealink on the western fringe and also connect Nariman Point in the south.
 
Beginning from Sewre on the eastern periphery of the island city, another section will extend undersea to connect the JNPT at Nhava Seva across the bay.
 
This section will also connect the Mumbai Port on the eastern coast.
 
Gadkari noted that the government aims to bring down the cost and plans to appoint a consultant with regard to this. In order to make the project financially viable, necessary assistance from the government side would be provided.
 
The government also has proposals for a Surat-Mumbai elevated road, which is yet to be revived.
