A company that provides eco-friendly products, announced that it is developing a highly efficient wing sail which will generate significant forward thrust on commercial vessels. The vessel will be using wind as fuel in order to decrease the vessel's fuel consumption.

Specifically, the vessel will be environmentally friendly by using wind.

The operational profile of the ship will have to be adapted, as well as the weather routing in a major part of it.

Yet, for long range operation the wind will take the place of the fuel.

The vessel's wing sail will consist of two vertical sections, forming an aerodynamic foil.

A benefit is that the wing sails can be operated at a small angle towards the apparent wind, letting the vessel use the wing sails most of the times.

Additionally, in order to pass under bridges, provide safe operation in port and 'reef' the system in hard conditions, the vessel has a lay-down device for the new technology.

Concluding the collaboration for this project is between Becker and Wallenius Marine.
