Tinn news: Plans for one of the biggest port related construction projects ever undertaken in the Elbe community of Wedel-Schulau on the western outskirts of Hamburg have been outlined by local authorities.
The project, which reports said would cost about €13m at current prices, covers the restructuring and upgrading of the town’s heavily silted Schulau harbour on the Elbe. The harbour, which has a beach area and a marina for small boats, lies alongside Hamburg’s famous Willkomm-Höft Restaurant.
That legendary facility is itself undergoing a €3.5m revamp up to April. Since 1952 it has greeted ships serving Hamburg by playing their national anthems over loudspeakers. That practice continues while the renovations are taking place.
Fred Niemann at the Mayor’s Office in Wedel told MJ it was expected that the Schulauer Hafen construction work would start in autumn this year and last one to two years. He added that tenders had not yet been invited so who would do the work was still not known. Reports said most of the money for the harbour revamp was coming from the EU and from local authorities.
The plans have been drawn up for town officials by a German architectural and planning working group comprising Inros Lackner and WES & Partners.
They include the widening of the rear part of the harbour basin to 84m and shortening it to taper into the Elbe at 53m. The basin will be bordered by a new quay wall along which people can walk, with new steps to the water, a flood protection dyke and a renovated slipway. A lateral mole and a harbour gate will be built to prevent swell and stop silt from entering the basin, with the gate 15m wide to allow access for ‘oldtimer’ vessels. The harbour will be dredged to 3.5m to allow easy access for such ships.
