Toronto expands traffic signal retiming programme

TIN news:  The City of Toronto, Canada is expanding its traffic signal retiming programme by updating an additional 357 signals on 17 corridors to ease traffic flow.
By the end of next year, approximately 1,500 signals, about 60% of the traffic signals, across the city will be retimed.
Signal retiming enables signals to remain up-to-date and responsive to the requirements of road users.

Toronto Public Works and Infrastructure Committee chair and Ward 25 Don Valley West councillor Jaye Robinson said: "Smarter traffic signals keep our streets moving for transit and drivers, while bringing down fuel consumption to help reduce the city's emissions and improving air quality for those who walk and bike in our city."
The signal retiming programme is part of the city's congestion management plan.
Last year, signal retiming led to cut down in travel time along 11 of the busiest roads in the city.
337 signals were retimed on these important routes, which led to a 1% reduction in overall vehicle delay; 2% reduction in stops; 7% reduction in fuel consumption and 7% reduction in vehicle emissions.
