Australia invites tenders for NSW road upgrade works

TIN news:           The Australian Government is inviting tenders for the next stage of soft soil works on the Woolgoolga to Ballina section of the Pacific Highway upgrade project in New South Wales.

The Woolgoolga to Ballina project covers upgrade of 155km of the highway, starting 6km north of Woolgoolga and ending nearly 6km south of Ballina.

Deputy prime minister and infrastructure and regional development minister Warren Truss said: "Once the upgrade is complete, it will shave 25min off the travel time between the two centres and is expected to reduce crashes along the section by more than 20%."

The soft soil treatment needs to be undertaken before major building work begins on these sections.

The contractor will be required to install drains into the soft soil to extract water and build road foundations with granular fill to allow for quick settlement of soil.
"It will shave 25min off the travel time between the two centres and is expected to reduce crashes along the section by more than 20%."

New South Wales North Coast parliamentary secretary Chris Gulaptis said: "The tenders advertised are for works on a 1.4km section of the Pacific Highway south of Woodburn with work expected to start in November.

"A mandatory pre-tender meeting and site inspection for soft soil work near Woodburn will be scheduled with details available upon registration before tenders close on 7 October."

The soft soil works are being financed through the A$564.6m ($397m) Woolgoolga to Ballina planning and preconstruction project, involving A$282.3m ($198.6m) investment each by the federal and state governments.

The Woolgoolga to Ballina upgrade is being jointly funded by the two governments on an 80:20 sharing basis.

Valued at A$5.64bn ($3.9bn), the Pacific Highway upgrade will lead to the construction of 155km of four-lane divided highway between the Arrawarra Interchange and the Ballina Bypass, improving road safety and providing more rest opportunities for drivers
