ABB to provide traction converters for Stadler Rails trains

 
TIN news:        Power and automation technologies provider ABB has secured orders worth $40m from Swiss firm Stadler Rail for train projects in Europe and the US.
 
For these projects, ABB will provide traction converters with integrated onboard power supplies and roof-mounted traction transformers.
 
These systems will help Stadler Rail to convert electricity from overhead power lines to the voltage levels required to train motors.
 
In addition, it will supply required electricity for power systems, including lighting, heating, ventilation, passenger information systems and automatic doors.

ABB Discrete Automation and Motion division president Pekka Tiitinen said: "These orders are an affirmation of the successful partnership between Stadler Rail and ABB.

The equipment will be supplied to electric and diesel-electric Stadler trains destined for Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in California and the trains operated by Spain's Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Catalunya (FGC).
 
The trains to be equipped with ABB traction converters also include electrical mountain trains for the Jungfrau, the highest rail station in Europe.
 
Since 2002, Stadler Rail received traction equipment from ABB for more than 1,500 regional trains and more than 300 light-rail vehicles.
 
In September last year, Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) awarded a $75.4m contract to ABB Switzerland to deliver new traction equipment for its Re 460 fleet electric locomotives.
 
Under this contract, ABB will supply 202 power converters with an option to deliver 38 more units.
