Norwegian ship designer Havyard Design & Solutions has been awarded a contract to the two new cargo vessels for Greenland’s exclusive shipping company Royal Arctic Line.

The vessels will be designed to transport temperature-controlled containers and general cargo in northwest Greenland.

Royal Arctic Line, which is wholly-owned by the Government of Greenland, holds a monolopy over all seaborne freight shipped to and from and within Greenland.

The two cargo ships will be built at Zamakona Yards in Spain and are scheduled for delivery in 2020.

The vessels will be 67 meters in length and have total cargo capacity of 60 containers or 500 pallets. They will be built with four cargo holds, all with different temperature zones from refrigeration at -27°C to cooling at +4°C, Havyard says.

“The two vessels will operate in northwest Greenland, which makes stringent requirements of the vessels’ design, as they will operate in a rough climate, sail in and out of shallow ports, meet ice class requirements and comply with the Polar Code,” Havyard said in a statement.

The newbuilds are intended to replace the Royal Arctic Line vessels Pajuttaat and Vestlandia, which were built in 1979 and 1983, respectively.

“Our collaboration with Royal Arctic Line A/S has been very fruitful, and there’s a good chance that Havyard will get more opportunities in this segment,’ says Havyard’s Senior Vice President of Sales, Gisle Vinjevoll Thrane.
