Mining executives and regulators discuss IMO codes

TIN news:   Bulk-CarrierThe International Maritime Organization (IMO), the UN global standard-setting authority for the safety, security and environmental performance of international shipping, has introduced new regulations relevant to the bulk transport of minerals and metals products. How are the regulations changing and what are the consequences for the mining industry?

These were questions discussed in a workshop in Washington, DC on 23 July. Co-hosted by ICMM, the North American Metals Council (NAMC) and the National Mining Association (NMA), the event brought together industry executives and regulators to share the latest technical work that will help mining companies comply with the new regulation.

As Ben Davies, ICMM, explained, "Due to the investment in sound scientific principles that the industry has made over the past decade through projects such as ICMM's Metals Environmental Risk Assessment Guidance (MERAG), the mining industry is well positioned to respond to the implementation challenges that IMO's new regulations pose."
