Acrow Bridge assists Georgia DOT in Northwest Corridor Project development

TINNews |

Acrow Bridge has supplied a temporary ‘straddle bent’ support structure to the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) to use it at the time of constructing an interstate ramp in Atlanta as part of the Northwest Corridor Project.

The Northwest Corridor Project is currently under construction and will add around 30 miles of express and toll lanes along I-75 and I-575 highways, thereby reducing traffic congestion in the north-western suburbs of metro Atlanta.

Started in 2014, construction of the project is expected to be completed next year.

During the construction of the ramp from I-285 eastbound to I-75 northbound, contractor Northwest Express Roadbuilders rented a temporary support system from Acrow as a full closure of the road was not possible due to heavy traffic.

"Acrow’s temporary straddle bent support structure was the perfect solution for this challenging project."

The temporary support system, comprising two 70ft-high towers and an 85ft-long straddle bent pier, supported four girders during the staged erection sequence for the flyover over the ramp.

In the project, the towers and straddle bent were required to be a moment frame as it was not possible to use guy wires.

Acrow Bridge Southeast regional manager Will Smith said: “Acrow’s temporary straddle bent support structure was the perfect solution for this challenging project.

“While this was a difficult job, it was ultimately very rewarding to be a part of this very complex road improvement project.”

Acrow Bridge focuses on delivering modular steel bridging solutions for vehicle, rail, vessel, military and pedestrian use.
