TIR in focus as Jordanian-Iraqi border reopens
TINNews |

The Trebil border on a vital route for trade and land transport between Iraq and Jordan has reopened this week, casting TIR as a critical tool to provide a much needed mechanism for trade facilitation and transit.

Jordan’s current application of the TIR system and Iraq’s forthcoming accession, highlights the global customs transit system as a means to facilitate the secure transit of goods with a single international guarantee.

The Aqaba Special Economic Zone, which includes an intermodal logistics platform and port, was previously a key transit hub for trade into Iraq. It is the closest border connecting Jordan with Iraq’s Western and Central regions, therefore offering time and cost savings for exports and transit.

The Trebil border crossing was closed in mid-2015 for security reasons and its reopening has since been a high priority for the governments of both countries.
