The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has selected TransCore for two intelligent transportation system (ITS) maintenance contracts totaling US$40m over the next five years, continuing a relationship that has been in existence for more than two decades.

FDOT’s District 6 has awarded TransCore a five-year contract to provide maintenance services on all SunGuide ITS infrastructure throughout Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. The FDOT Central Office has also signed a five-year contract for TransCore to maintain the agency’s statewide ITS communications network, which consists of microwave transmission infrastructure, land mobile radio infrastructure, and tower facilities supporting the network throughout the state, including the Florida Keys. Both contracts are effective through to June 2022, and both come with five-year renewal options.

“For over 20 years, we have proudly partnered with FDOT districts to provide motorists with a reliable, first-class ITS infrastructure that meets the needs of one of the fastest growing states in the country,” said Tim Fischer, TransCore’s senior vice president of ITS services. “We are honored that FDOT continues to place their trust in our people and our services.”

A leader in the USA’s transportation industry, TransCore provides innovative technical solutions and engineering services for applications encompassing next generation open road tolling and traffic management systems. A pioneer in radio frequency identification (RFID) systems used in the transportation industry, the company operates award-winning tolling customer service centers for departments of transportation (DOTs) throughout the USA and internationally.

One of TransCore’s flagship projects in the state is with FDOT’s District 3, where the company provided turnkey design, installation, operations and maintenance services for a freeway management system and Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC) for the agency. Spanning over 40 miles (64km) along Interstates 10 and 110 around Pensacola, the system provides roadside instrumentation for full traffic management and weather information. The system communicates with the RTMC across a fiber optic backbone with supplemental wireless communication infrastructure. The base system deployed 12 dynamic message signs (DMS), 40 CCTV cameras, 88 microwave vehicle detectors, and one road weather information station (RWIS), plus full build-out of the RTMC and video wall.

For every full year under the operations and maintenance portion of the contract, TransCore has maintained a total system uptime performance of 99.8% or more, exceeding the department’s established 95% benchmark.
