NSW authority releases final design of M4-M5 link

TINNews |

TIN news:  Australia's New South Wales (NSW) Government has revealed the concept design for the M4-M5 link, which is expected to create a vital link between two of Sydney’s busiest motorways.

Authorities anticipate that construction works for the M4-M5 link would begin by next year and are slated for completion in 2023.

New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said: “Like the Harbour Bridge did for the North Shore, the M4-M5 Link will bridge a major gap in the road network, creating a non-stop underground western bypass of Sydney’s CBD with links to the port and airport precincts.

“This is the most critical section of WestConnex and the most beneficial as it will slash travel times, as well as significantly reduce traffic volume on Parramatta Road compared to a situation where the project wasn’t delivered.”

By 2031, commuters are expected to have travel time reduced between Parramatta and Sydney Airport by up to 40 minutes, as well as a 20 minutes reduction in travel between Burwood and Sydney Airport during peak traffic hours.

The project will also see a reduction of truck movement on the Parramatta Road east of Concord, as well as cut travel time between Burwood and Sydney Airport by nearly 30 minutes.

"The M4-M5 Link will bridge a major gap in the road network, creating a non-stop underground western bypass of Sydney’s CBD with links to the port and airport precincts."

WestConnex Minister for Stuart Ayres said: “We’ve listened to the community, and we are now seeking further feedback and ideas to refine the project’s design ahead of the Environmental Impact Statement, which will be released mid-year.

“The M4-M5 link will form a key part of Sydney’s road network by connecting to projects like the Western Harbour Tunnel and M6 motorway, while also improving the livability of local communities.”

The government intends to sell its 51% stake in the Sydney Motorway, the transport company engaged in delivering WestConnex project in order to generate funds for the project's final stage.

Officials are expected to call for expressions of interest for the WestConnex sale later this year and intend to close the deal by mid-2018.
