Cargill plans to reduce shipping emissions 15% by 2020, in an attempt to comply with new regulations which mandate the reduction of pollution. For this reason, the company demanded from some of its food manufacturer customers to conduct more environmentally-friendly operations.

Currently, Cargill does not own any ships, however it charters about 650 vessels worldwide. As Reuters reported, this reduction in CO2 emisssions is initially targeted to the company's time-chartered fleet. Nevertheless, Cargill has in its plans to reduce GHG emissions cross all of its operations by 10% by 2025.
On of the ways that the Minnesota-based company is trying to eliminate emissions, is by leasing newer ships, which are more fuel efficient, and secondly, by working with ship designers to come up with new ships that emit less pollutants, Jan Dieleman, who heads Cargill’s Ocean Transportation Business, mentioned.
Moreover, the company is currently trying to convince its partner shipping companies to install scrubbers, while in the meantime it calls them to explore the possibility of using LNG and biofuels to power freighters.
