Chile to create marine protected area

Chile is ready to transform the Admiralty Sound (Seno Almirantazgo) into the country’s first Multiple Use Marine Coastal Protected Area (AMP-MU) in the province of Tierra del Fuego.

According to local media, the director of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Bárbara Saavedra was excited about this development, which was decided by the Council of Ministers of Sustainability of Chile.

Specifically, she said that a project like this, will conserve the first protected marine are in Chile and can develop a management of coastal preservation.

AMP-MU Admiralty Sound will protect species like leopard seals, sea elephants and black-browed albatrosses, as well as natural oyster banks and places that are of a tourist and archaeological interest.

This project will make Chile the country with the largest protected marine area, the President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet announced, as the creation of a Marine Protected Areas Network in Magallanes is planned.

AMP-MU Admiralty Sound will be a fjord with an area of 80km off Tierra del Fuego and will be near the coasts of WCS Parks Alberto de Agostini and Karukinka of Chile, local media reports.
