Colombo Port handles over ۵ million containers this year

TIN news:   Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port for the first time in history has handled over 5 million twenty-foot-equivalent units container volume this year, according to latest figures in port services.
Last year the Colombo Port handled a container volume of 4.908 million TEUs. Colombo Port, consisting of three container terminals, is expected to boost volume 5 to 10 percent this year over 2014.
It has been reported that 3,854 container vessels have come to Colombo Harbor during this year, compared to the 3,742 arrived last year.
Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port has emerged as a growing transshipment hub capable of handling the increasing number of mega-ships vessels with capacities of 10,000 TEUs and up. CMA CGM Marco Polo, one of the world’s largest container ships with a capacity of 16,020 TEUs arrived in Colombo in late September. A special ceremony will be held tomorrow at the Jaya Container Terminal to mark the Port’s significant milestone, the national radio reported.
