Italy investigates fire mishap at Fiumicino airport

TIN news:        The Italian Government has initiated an enquiry into a fire mishap in a pine grove near the Leonardo Da Vinci airport in Fiumicino, which led to suspension of all flights for more than two hours.

The dense smoke blowing over the runway has forced the airport to suspend its operations on Wednesday, leading to delays of of several hours.

This is the third such incident of a fire in the pine grove in the past three months. The airport has now resumed its operation completely.

Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said that an investigation will be carried out to determine whether the fire had been started deliberately.

An inspection by authorities has reportedly found that the fire, which burnt several vehicles in a nearby car park, had started at multiple places.

Two fire-fighting planes and helicopters had to be deployed to control the blaze.

The latest fire incident follows another fire outbreak at the airport that substantially destroyed its international terminal in May.

While the earlier fire, believed to have been caused due to an electrical fault in a bar had not resulted in any casualties, it destroyed a shopping area at terminal three.

The airport had to reduce its capacity by around 40% as a result of the incident
