Alstom to deliver signalling equipment for Egyptian Railway

TIN News:        Alstom has secured a €100m contract from Egyptian National Railways (ENR) to deliver signalling equipment for the Beni Suef-Asyut line in Egypt.

The contract also makes Alstom responsible for the maintenance of the 240km-long Beni Suef-Asyut line for five years.

Under this contract, Alstom will supply its new Smartlock electronic interlocking system (EIS), in order to replace the existing electromechanical system, trackside equipment, power supply and telecommunication system.
"Alstom has been supporting the country's railway projects for 30 years, including the Cairo metro, and aims to accompany the country for more projects to come."

The system will offer better safety for passengers when the network will have more than 80% increase in the number of trains in circulation, Alstom said.

Alstom Transport Middle East and Africa senior vice-president Gian-Luca Erbacci said: "Alstom has been supporting the country's railway projects for 30 years, including the Cairo metro, and aims to accompany the country for more projects to come."

The rail manufacturer is expected to start delivery of the equipments in 2016. The system is scheduled to start operations by January 2019.

Financed by the World Bank, the project was launched by Egypt's Ministry of Transport in a bid to upgrade signalling systems all over the ENR network, improve operation and increase the level of safety to comply with international standards.
