TIN news:      France's Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport has laid the first stone for the construction of the future Terminal 1, which will equip the airport to handle close to 15 million passengers by 2020.
 
A total of €180m will be invested in the expansion project, €140m of which will be spent on building work comprising the terminal building, the exterior, aircraft parking and facilities.
 
The airport is carrying out the expansion project to focus on quality of service, increasing competitiveness through operational efficiency, developing non-commercial revenue and increasing the capacity to welcome air operators.

The terminal will have a total capacity of approximately ten million passengers and is compliant with HQE standards to enable it to handle the increasing low-cost traffic, in addition to the traffic from traditional airlines.
 
Building work would be split into two phases, with the first phase to include construction of the new terminal and the second to involve connecting it to the existing Terminal 1.
 
The terminal would also use innovative equipment, which would help in meeting the expectations of passengers while responding to new passenger consumption patterns.
 
While the new terminal will currently be an extension to the existing Terminal 1, it will eventually be connected to the current Terminal 3 boarding satellite with the help of an underground gallery.
 
The existing metal-fabric section of Terminal 3 will be demolished in mid-2016. A pedestrian esplanade will be added to the outside areas on the city side apart from infrastructure for all ground access points.
 
The construction work is being led by GFC Construction (representative) in partnership with Quille Construction and Bouygues Energies & Services and will be managed by Chabanne + Partenaires.
