Hong Kong International Airport continued to report strong growth in its cargo volumes in July as exports continued to thrive.

Cargo throughput at the airport increased by 11% year on year in July to reach 422,000 tonnes.

The percentage growth is roughly in line with growth reported over the first seven months, which stood at 2.7m tonnes, up 11.3% on a year earlier.

In a statement, the airport said: “Coinciding with an improvement in global trade, exports continued to lead the strong growth in cargo throughput.

“Exports experienced 15% growth while transhipments also rose by 10% during the month. Amongst key trading regions, Europe recorded the most significant increase.”

On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 4.8m tonnes of cargo, recording a year-on-year increases of 9.5%.

In Europe, Heathrow saw cargo demand in July increase by 15.1%, while Fraport saw freight and airmail increase by 4.2% during the month.

The MAG Group of airports in the UK have also reported their cargo growth figures for July; East Midlands increased by 2.6% year on year to 27,856 tonnes, London Stansted was up 2.1% to 21,255 tonnes and there was a 20.6% improvement at Manchester to 12,059 tonnes.

The improvement in cargo at Manchester was down to the addition of more direct long-haul connections, such as Beijing, Singapore, Houston and Muscat.
