Airlink Selected for St. Helena Island Air Service

TINNews |

Airlink confirmed its selection by the St Helena Government as its preferred bidder to provide a commercial scheduled airline service to the South Atlantic island.

Rodger Foster, Airlink Chief Executive Officer, said:

“This is a significant vote of confidence in Airlink and we look forward to the next step in the process leading to the formalization of an agreement for what will be a historic step in St Helena’s development.”

Airlink’s selection follows a demonstration of the capability of its newly acquired Embraer E-190 to land and take off from the recently built airport on St Helena island. In April, Airlink also operated a special charter flight from Cape Town to St Helena.

The advent of regular scheduled flights to and from St Helena will end the islanders’ total dependence on the mail ship ferry service for transport of people and goods between the island and Cape Town, which, for many decades, has been the island’s sole transport connection with the African continent and the rest of the world.

“We anticipate being able to share details of the air service upon finalisation of negotiations with the St Helena Government,” added Mr Foster.
