Bandaranaike International Airport to build new terminal and modernise runway

TINNews |

TIN news:  Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is set to construct a second international terminal and upgrade its existing runway as part of a major infrastructure expansion.

The new international terminal will be developed to increase the annual passenger capacity of the transport hub, which is also known as Colombo International Airport, to 15 million passengers.

The scope of work for the 30-year-old runway overlay project includes the delivery and commissioning of the complete light-emitting diode (LED) airfield ground lighting (AGL), signs, an airfield lighting control and monitoring system (ALCMS), and power management solutions.

During the project, ADB Safegate will work with subcontractor CATIC-ENG China and airport authorities to enhance the airport's capacity and operational efficiency using energy-efficient solutions.

CATIC-ENG China will deliver, test and commission full LED airfield lighting for the upgraded runway and taxiway, as well as LED precision-approach path indicators (PAPI) and signs.

ADB Safegate will also provide its MCR III constant current regulator and ALCMS for the modernised runway.

The replacement of halogen lights with LEDs on the runway will help improve energy efficiency and increase energy savings.

"ADB Safegate will work with subcontractor CATIC-ENG China to enhance the airport's capacity and operational efficiency."

The LEDs, along with the ALCMS and the surface movement guidance and control systems (SMGCS), will also facilitate the expansion of the runway capacity.

While the AGL is expected to be delivered this month, the commissioning date is slated for October.

Bandaranaike International Airport Civil Engineering Project and Design head G Withanage said: “Bandaranaike International Airport, especially its single runway, needed an upgrade to keep up with demand, and we were conscious of the importance of minimising environmental impact.

“ADB Safegate has proven itself as a trusted partner and has end-to-end expertise in LED AGL design and delivery, an ideal combination for powering Southern Asia’s first full LED runway.”

With construction work slated to commence this month, the airport infrastructure expansion project will see the development of two pier buildings with an additional 16 boarding gates.

It will also include the construction of an additional apron area to increase the number of parking bays, including 45 for mixed aircraft configurations.
